Tropical Savanna of the Llanos of Colombia

This tour takes you to the outstanding ecoregion of the flooded grasslands and savannas biome known as "Llanos", that belongs to the Orinoco River watershed and borders the Andes to the west, the Venezuelan coastal zone to the north and the Amazon to the south.The flooding during the wet season makes the area unique for its wildlife and incredible landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Yopal and transfer to Hato la Aurora

We will take a flight in the morning towards Yopal, a municipality in the east of Colombia, capital city of the department of Casanare. From there we will be transferred to Hato La Aurora Lodge. During the 5 hours drive we will be birding along the road, enjoying the magnificent Llanos Landscape.

Day 2-4: Hato La Aurora

Hato la Aurora, is a 16,000 hectare (40,000 acre) birder´s paradise- private cattle ranch dedicated to preserving the unique llanos ecosystem. Protecting a huge collection of Colombian Llanos species, some restricted to the Orinoco region, such as Pale-headed Jacamar, Orinoco Goose, Purple-throated Euphonia and White-bearded Flycatcher.

We will spend three full days in this amazing reserve looking for the specialties named above, plus some unique lowland birds like the Jabiru, Maguari Stork, Horned Screamer, Sunbittern, Scarlet Ibis, Double-striped Thick-Knee, Hoatzin, Dwarf Cuckoo, Great Horned Owl, Black-and-white Owl, Burrowing Owl, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Russet-throated Puffbird, Wire-tailed Manakin, Orange-crowned Oriole and many more.

Day 5: Flight back to Bogotá

The last day we will be transferred back to Bogotá through Yopal´s airport.
