Mitú

Mitú is included within the Endemic Bird Area (EBA-065) known as “Orinoco- Negro White Sand Forest”, Mitú has 8 out of the 12 endemic species to this EBA.  It is a great site for Amazonian/Guianan Shield birding combining a variety of habitats, and several white sand forest specialty birds.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

We will fly to Mitú from Bogota in the morning, after lunch we will be birding around town looking for our first specialties such as Point-tailed Palmcreeper, among other commoner species.

Day 2: Mitú Cachivera

We will be birding south-west of Mitú, in this zona we will find mostly white sand forest, but also some open dry varillal forests as well as humid chamizal and terra firme. There main targets will be Blackish-Gray Antshrike, Grey-bellied Antbird, Pompadour, Spangled and Purple-breasted Cotingas, Yellow-crowned Manakin, Pavonine Quetzal, Great-billed Hermit, Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin, Bar-bellied Woodcreeper, Imeri Warbling-Antbird, Brown-headed Greenlet, Black Manakin, White-naped Seedeater and Plumbeous Euphonia.

Day 3: Ceima Cachivera

Main target there is without doubt the Cock-of-the-Rock, locals knows where they lek, so will hike to the places they have seen them recently. We also will be birding through some open forest and some decent patches of terra firme, where we hope to find Western Striped Manakin, Orinoco Piculet, Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Rufous-tailed Antwren, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Rufous-crested Elaenia and Olive-backed Foilage-gleaner, among others.

Day 4: Bocatoma Trail

This trail follows for a long way crossing numerous streams, also we will find some white sand forest patches. Specialties that can be found there includes Grey-bellied Antbird, Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet, Cherrie’s Antwren, Spot-backed Antwren, Spot-backed Antbird, and Yellow-browed Antbird.

Day 5: Pueblo Nuevo

There, we will be birding in terra firme forest again, looking for Chestnut-crested Antbird, Tawny-tufted Toucanet, Pavonine Quetzal, Cinnamon Manakin-Tyrant (Neopipo), Rusty-breasted Nunlet, Brown-banded Puffbird, Yellow-crowned Manakin, Long-winged Antwren, Common Scale-backed Antbird, Scarlet Macaw, Great Jacamar and Rufous-capped Antthrush.

Day 6: Urania

In our last full day of birding we will be birding in the most reliable place in Mitu for Brown-banded Puffbird, Amazonian Tyrannulet, Spotted Puffbird, and Bronzy Jacamar (four of the main targets of the zone). Other targets include Pied Puffbird, Black-chinned Antbird, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Paradise Jacamar, Many-banded Aracari, Azure-naped Jay, Great Jacamar and Yellow-throated Antwren.

Day 7: flight back to Bogotá

Flights normally are in the afternoon, so we will squeeze some birding during the morning depending on the time and what we may have not seen the days before.
